Seasons End

Tamara Henderson

Seasons End

In the past, travelers would come home, gather friends and recount their adventures over projected carousel slide shows and home movies. Tamara Henderson’s Seasons End (2016) could be seen in that light. Shot on 16mm, the 15-minute film follows the dreamlike road trip taken by two sculptures, Garden Photographer Scarecrow and Body Fountain Fetch, across Istanbul, Essaouira and Tangier, Los Angeles, Oregon, Stavanger, Glasgow and Arbroath. Their car is here too, parked vertically on the wall of the first gallery, stripped of the luggage and souvenirs it once carried.

Body Fountain Fetch does not appear on camera, while the Garden Photographer Scarecrow appears in full only once. Surrealism has long been a strong influence on Henderson’s work, and here elements that could otherwise seem disparate come together in animated compositions, moved by threads and ropes held in gloved hands. The gestures are simple, often ritualistic. An egg recurs, moving from a handcrafted installation with plants to a silver teapot set and finally to a rusting, abandoned site. A cut watermelon, turned into a container and filled with foil-wrapped material, sits beside a red flowering branch on top of a map, on the deck of the moving car. At the end of the long and turbulent drive, the travelers arrive at a field where another scarecrow stands, waiting for them. Objects become characters; sculptures become performers.

The film was edited in-camera, preserving the order in which the scenes were filmed and giving it the feeling of having been made in one go. The soundtrack, composed by Dan Riley, pushes the images forward and sets their mood. At times fast and propulsive, it turns the trip into an action film of sorts; at others, it is slow, atmospheric and meditative.

Seasons End belongs to a series of works of the same name, conceived in 2015. As with all the artist’s series, it reflects her biography and circumstances at the time of its making. Here, we follow the Garden Photographer Scarecrow through life, sickness, death and transformation.

The first presentation took place at Glasgow International in 2016, where the film was projected through the car. There, the Garden Photographer Scarecrow stood over 24 smaller anthropomorphic scarecrows, recording memories through a pinhole camera hidden in her body, while Body Fountain Fetch lay on the floor nearby.

A few months later, at REDCAT, Los Angeles, the Scarecrow fell ill and was laid on a makeshift hospital bed on an IV drip, attended by Panting Healer. Following her death, a cremation ceremony took place on a nearby beach.

At the Serpentine’s Park Nights (2017) in London, another ceremony took place: a live performance in front of an audience, where the different anthropomorphic scarecrows came to life, walking across Kensington Gardens with Henderson filming what would later become the second film of the series, Seasons End: Out of Body (2018).

Seasons End: Out of Body was also the title of the exhibition at Oakville Galleries in 2017, where the Scarecrow’s ashes were placed inside Bar of Body, a winged figure with a mechanical breathing apparatus.

Seasons End: More Than Suitcases at the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, in 2018 brought together figures from all these chapters.

Elements of the series were also presented at Tate Modern, London, in 2019 and Tate St Ives in 2023, in solo presentations under the title Of Seasons End.

As the work travelled, characters changed, disappeared and returned, while materials gathered on Henderson’s own travels took new forms.

This presentation at Sylvia Kouvali is the first time the film is presented as the centre of the installation, and the first time it has been screened since 2016. In the coming months, different scarecrows from the series will also appear across the spaces.

When this film was made, none of this had happened. We see the Scarecrow alive and on the road before her illness, death and cremation, before her ashes would later be carried into another body. Like an old holiday film, watching it now transports us back to a time gone by. Nothing of that journey remains in the present other than the film itself and the remnants of the car parked near it. The exhibition begins with two travelers returning from their adventure, carrying images and souvenirs from elsewhere. Seen ten years after it was made, the film carries two distances: from a trip long finished, and from seasons whose ending we already know.

Seasons End

Το Seasons End: Out of Body

Η έκθεση Seasons End: More Than Suitcases στην Douglas Hyde Gallery του Δουβλίνου, το 2018, συγκέντρωσε μορφές από όλα αυτά τα κεφάλαια.
