Over the past twenty years, James Richards has developed a practice shaped by the collection and transformation of existing material.
Drawing on archives, literary fragments, and contemporary visual culture, his work explores how meaning is transmitted and transformed through editing and recombination.

At the center of The Buildable Self, the artist's first exhibition in Milan, is an ongoing question of how we construct and understand the self: not as a fixed or coherent identity to be recovered, but as something provisional, assembled through memory, desire, intimacy, loss, and the things we tell ourselves in order to keep functioning.
