Sylvia Kouvali Piraeus October 1 – November 7, 2026 Works, 1969 - 1974 Rika Pana It is with great pleasure to start the new season with three solo exhibitions of artists Rika Pana (b.1929, Athens GR ), Tamara Henderson (b.1982, New Brunswick CA) and Veronika Hapchenko (b.1995, Kyiv UA)Rika Pana’s work has recently seen the light through a series of exhibitions and a publication that brought forward the work of a very private and almost interior practise. The presentation of her work in the Democracy exhibition at the National Gallery (2024) stood out. She has spent five decades since the 60s till the early 2000s producing a type of panhuman painting (on canvas and on paper), as a response and reaction to the political situation in Greece in the 60s and 70s, anti-dictatorial and one that aims for freedom and the light. Her gestural, thick and very dark brushstrokes, almost expressionist and part abstract have built a bold and consistent language of figures mainly women and children, explosions, a lunar fascination and what she named the erosion of civilisation; all set on flat monochromatic backgrounds (green, red and blue). The exhibition, split between the gallery’s two main rooms, presents a selection of works from all decades, on canvas and paper in the first gallery whilst the second room pays tribute to the series The Erosion of Civilisation.
